Salmon River Main Camp 2 School

Commentary by Pat Reynolds

The trees had grown back by 1950, but the buildings were the same.

The original school #1 in the photo is where I started grade 2 in 1950. One room contained all grades. The teacher was Miss Irene Cummings (prior to becoming Miss Irene MacDonald). She lived in the addition to the school.

School #2 was the camp office and stores. When it was closed and moved to the Beach Camp around 1953, the office section closest to the water tower was turned into a one room school. We were in this school for about a year.

After that, my mom Doreen Smyth drove us students in my dad's car to White River Store every day to catch the school bus. The bus ran on the gravel road with the logging trucks.

I remember some of the other students: the Berg boys, Dennis, Larry and Kenny. Ruth and Carolyn Flett, Jerry Kroks, Monty and Myrna Morran, Carol Creelman, and my brother Larry Smyth.
This school also was grade 1-12.

The teacher that followed Miss Cummings was Mr Marten. He gave me the strap for writing in pencil. It was in the days of the old ink wells, with the pen and nib, and I'm left-handed. He had to catch me first, but I didn't cry.

We lived across the bridge on the right of the 1st picture. There were 7 or 8 houses, a wooden tennis court, and a baseball field.
