Vern Skogan, Charge Hand at the dryland sort. Vern's father - who passed away at the age of 99 in February - was one of the original settlers in the Sayward Valley, and a logger as well. One of Vern's three sons, Gordie operates a stacker at the sort.
"The townsite has changed a lot in the last few years," Vern says. "A lot of the farming is gone around the valley. Now we depend on logging, with a little commercial fishing. We live a lot better these days than we used to do years ago, despite people's memories. You can't return to the past."
